Development of plantation with emphasis on economic plantation with the participation of the people is one of the general policies follows by Forests, Range and Watershed Management Organization in the country’s sixth development plan. Conservation of forests, eliminating the need country industries for wood and employment are important factors that increase the value of wood farming. Identification and introduction of different poplar varieties that are more adapted to different climatic conditions of the country and have a high yield in terms of wood production are among the goals pursued by the Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands in line with the general policies of the Sixth Development Plan.
The compatibility of different poplar clones is one of the important factors that have a great impact on the development of wood farming.
Actions have been taken in connection with of poplar adaptation for decades. Species and different poplar clones have been tested at stations with varied climatic conditions for about thirty years ago. One of the important priorities in case of compatibility of poplar trees is high yield in wood production. The result of researchers’ experiments over decades is clones that have shown good yield in terms of wood production.
Researchers of the Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands have introduced many clones with remarkable wood production characteristics and compatible with the climate of each province over the years. These species are named and introduced after numerous experiments and investigations. Several poplar species with adaptation and high yield characteristics, including Gildar, Rahmati and Alborz, have been released and several other varieties will be released soon.
Experimentation and introduction of new varieties adapted to different climatic conditions continue after years. These experiments are being carried out in the Northern provinces as well as the provinces outside the north with the aim of introducing more varieties with higher capabilities. New varieties are being provided to utilizers to develop wood farming and a positive step towards employment and eliminate part of the country’s need for wood.
In the national development program of wood farming that is one of the most important programs of the Forests, Range and Watershed Management Organization, country’s poplar plantations distribution is one of the important things which has been assigned to the researchers of the Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands. Determining the area under poplar cultivation and surveying these areas is one of the essentials that contribute to the development of poplar cultivation in different regions of the country.
About 35 hectares of lands of the country’s research stations will be planted by poplar, until the end of the year 1399.
