The National Botanical Garden of Iran (NBGI) covers over 150 hectares and is home to more than 4000 species, making it a valuable repository of the country’s genetic resources. In addition, NBGI also manages satellite gardens in Noshahr, Kashan, Dezful, Khorramabad, Yazd, and the Medicinal Collection of Hamedan. The garden exhibits Iranian and foreign habitats, including the Hyrcanian and Zagros forests, the southern slopes of Alborz, the Irano-Turanian region, a greenhouse for tropical plants, an Iranian bulbs garden, an Iranian fruit garden, a China and Japan garden, a European habitat, a Caucasian habitat, American meadows, and a Himalayan habitat. The various sections of the garden include the Central Square, Rose Garden, Iranian Garden, Systematic Garden, Medicinal Garden, Rock Garden and Waterfall, Broadleaf Evergreen Garden, Chrysanthemum Garden, and an Educational-Training Garden, Plant Nursery and Cactus Garden.
NBGI pursues the following main goals:
Educating people about botanical concepts
– Conducting research, cultivating native and exotic plants, domesticating them, and displaying them to the public
– Conserving native species
– Protecting endangered species
– Undertaking research projects on plant establishment and phenology
– Enhancing public awareness of environmental issues
